I had heard and read about Foxit reader a number of times(including Digg) but unfortunately never tried it out.
A couple of days back I had to install a software on a freshly formatted system and the installation guide was in PDF format. I had 2 options to open/read the file.
- Install Adobe Acrobat Reader
- Try out Foxit reader 🙂
I opted for the second option and I am now regretting for not using this software earlier.
Opening PDF files is no longer a pain with Foxit reader. I had read that it loads the PDF documents very fast, but you have to try it out to believe how fast it is.
The Acrobat reader plugin for the browser(IE and Firefox) is a much bigger pain and it has frozen the browser many a times. I couldn’t find any Firefox extension or Firefox Plugin for Foxit but I did find a way of making the online PDF’s open in Foxit.
- Open Firefox.
- Select “Manage” in Tools -> Options -> Content
- Search for PDF Extension
- Select “Change Action”
- Choose “Open with the Default Application”
(Note: If the default option is not set to Foxit, you might need to start Foxit reader once and set it as the default application for PDF’s)
Unless you’re doing some serious creating/editing of PDF’s, Foxit is probably the only PDF reader you’ll ever need.
Download Foxit Reader (Windows Only)

Yup! I ve been using Foxit Reader over a year, and since then I’m lovin’ it. Ever since I trashed Adobe Reader, Firefox never crashed! 🙂
Yup its not just firefox i believe, the adobe reader plugin for both firefox and IE tries to download the file and open it within the browser(as a tab) and sometimes this used to freeze the browsers 🙂
Unfortunately this tip doesn’t work for me:
I’m using Firefox 2.0.0.4 in Windows XP.
Once I get to
2. Select “Manage in Tools -> Options -> Content
And try to
“3. Search for PDF Extension”
nothing happens, it won’t bring up that file extension for me, so i can’t change any settings.
any ideas peoples?
Its the same even on 2.0.0.4.
Go to Tools -> Options -> Content.
Search for “File Types” pane and click on the “Manage” button within this pane.
*sigh*
Is everybody stupid or what?
No, I do not want PDF´s to load in FoxIT as a _separate_ process but I want FireFox to open PDF´s _inline_ or _inframe_ or _intab_ or whatever the hell you call it.
No new window, I want to read PDF´s in the same TAB without using Adobe.
This cannot be done!!!! (yet)
Now with Foxit 3, you can open the PDF in browser
